I need an idea for a cheap, and I mean CHEAP, way we can make a composter. My husband thinks it's working just fine to dump our compost directly onto the ground and he comes and turns it every few weeks. I told him it needs to be contained so heat can generate and speed up the process. Plus, he goes and puts things like chicken bones in there and I always thought you weren't supposed to put meat products in it? Please help with info on the chemical process going on so I can convince him we need the actual BIN? And I need idea on how to make one easily ourselves. We do have laying around the yard 3 or 4 big barrels--would we have to cut the bottom out of one if we used that? Or could we use it with the bottom intact and get good results? Please help; this is a very stubborn man!

Your husband shouldn't put the chicken bones in the compost: It will attract vermin, for one thing.

It's not absolutely necessary to contain the compost- But it does help, and it helps keep it from being an eye sore.

Take a look at HGTV.Com, especially under listings for Gardening By The Yard: Paul James has described a number of effective and easy to make compost bins. I seem to remember one he made from pallets that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Behold: The mother of all compost bins. I hired my neighbor to drill the post-holes. No way am I digging in this rock! We used a pile of warped and age-hardened 2x10s for the back and sides, and bought 8' 4x4s for the uprights since the Home Despot had them on sale. Right now the plan is to keep all the compost pushed into one corner, then, just move it to the other side when I turn, mix and water it. However, the bin is big enough to build a divider so I can have a couple piles 'cooking' at the same time. We'll see. Many thanks to Bodega Bean for the used coffee grounds - that's a great ingredient for making "Black Gold".

My daughter asked to enroll in a summer art program, and I agreed because it was very low cost (money is tight until after I start getting paid after returning from layoff for a month).

Here's the catch: After she signed up, we found out that it was a class in "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" projects. They want the students to basically bring in a set number of art projects ideas for the first class, and then each student will bring in materials for those that are selected! I think it's great and all...a nice idea for summer projects that can be given out as gifts by the kids later on in the year...but they each need ideas for at least five projects (preferably ten), a list of materials needed, and step-by-step instructions! EEK!

Some of the things they talked about being most interested in being used are plastic bottles, tin cans, pop cans, paper milk cartons, plastic milk jugs, old magazines, old boxes (especially shoe boxes), and wooden picture frames (minus the glass).

I came up with some old school projects we did when I was a child...

1. A bird feeder made with old two liter bottles
2. A pen/pencil holder made from a soup can
3. An Easter bunny basket made with an old paper milk carton and cotton balls
4. A weaving loom made from an old picture frame

I don't think #4 is a good idea because it involves hammers and nails, and even though my daughter is capable, some of the children might not be. So, I'd like to come up with at least two more ideas...for kids ranging in age from 7-9...so nothing too difficult, and something that can be done in two hours (the length of the class).

I was thinking about old cat food cans (the short ones, not the ones the size of soup cans). We did a project in 4-H once using them, but for the life of me I can't remember what we did with them...

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas? Her class will start in two weeks, and I want to try them out with her to make sure they're not going to be too confusing before we make up the list.
