What is the British Lawn Mower Racing Association?

In 1973, a group of Wisborough Green, West Sussex, England townspeople created an alternative to expensive motor sports; a sport that everyone could participate in. The sport of racing mowers was born and so was the British Lawn Mower Racing Association.

The idea came from Jim Gavin, a well known rally car driver who competed all over the world.  He noticed a man mowing his lawn.  In into his brain popped the idea of racing mowers.  Everybody he knew had a mower, so no additional costs must be incurred.

The main idea was to keep the sport as cheap as possible so that everybody could join-in. No commercialism, no sponsors, no expensive modifications, and no cash prizes either; just pure clean fun.

Until now, the British Lawn Mower Racing Association still sticks to its non-profit mission and any money that they earn is directly given to charity.

Events and Groups:
A number of events are held each year including the much anticipated 12-Hour Race and 3-Hour Race.  Imagine racing mowers for that length of time. You can visit the BLMRA website for a list of scheduled events.

As far as racing groups are concerned, there are 4 groups to choose from.

Group 1 – A very tiring group, but calorie burning group that pushes classic hand-held mowers to the finish line. The fastest and the strongest usually win in this group.

Group 2 – This group is close to race car driving since you will be in a towed seat behind a self propelled mower. You can choose to tune the engine as long as it conforms to the rules. The British Lawn Mower Racing Association is strict with modification rules.

Group 3 – Ride-on mowers with chassis built for mowing domestic lawns and no more than 18hp engines. It is exciting to be racing mowers in this group as it has a feel of ATV racing.

Group 4 – The favorite among all the other groups. In this group, you will be racing tractor type mowers with front mounted engines. This is as close as you can get to race car driving because these mowers kick butt by topping out at speeds of up to 25-37KPH (40-60 MPH).

Tires will be digging dirt and the mower will be drifting on corners as you turn. The adrenaline rush and excitement brought about by racing mowers in this group is second to none.

A representative of the British Lawn Mower Racing Association inspects and approves your mower before you can race for groups 3 and 4.

The association limits the upgrades and modifications that you can do to your mower to keep costs down; this is unlike its American counterparts where the sky is the limit when it comes to modifying your racing mowers.

DIY Shed Ramps -

You just finished building your own shed and are ready to start putting all your "stuff" inside. But now you realize that you never even thought about how you were going to get that riding lawnmower in the shed. You have gone back online and found some DIY Shed Ramps that will work perfectly. Through your research you found out some important information about building your shed ramp.

If the ramp is not built correctly, it could collapse under heavy weight and if the incline is too steep will be very slippery to walk on when wet or icy. The incline should be at a rate of 3" per vertical foot. On top of being slippery and dangerous to walk on, if the ramp is too steep, if you have a riding lawnmower with a belly blade, the blade could get hung on the entrance to the shed, no only damaging your mower but the entrance to your shed.

If you are in a wet climate, whether it is cold or hot, algae can build up on the ramp.  This is dangerous enough for you to walk on, but if you are carrying tools or equipment or driving your lawnmower or ATV up this slippery ramp, you could get hurt or your equipment could slip off the ramp which could be cause a serious injury and damage to your equipment.

I can't stress enough how important it is to have enough slope on your ramp.  Just as important as the slope is you want it to be sturdy enough to hold the weight of a heavy man and the weight of a riding lawn mower.  If the shed ramp is not built sturdy enough to hold this weight, it could collapse.

Even if you don't have a riding mower, you should at least use 4" x 4" pressure treated wood and space them 12" apart for the framing.  For the deck surface, use 3/4" pressure treated plywood. On your ramp surface, it is wise to use a non-skid paint or a type of rubber matting that can be securely attached.  This will definitely lessen your chances of slipping and hurting yourself.

Another option, but an expensive option is pre-built metal shed ramps. DIY shed ramps can be just as safe and sturdy as metal shed ramps, if they are constructed properly.

As with any DIY project, it is always better to start with a set of plans.  By having a good set of plans, you will know exactly what you need to do to ensure your shed ramps are built sturdy.
