Larry Bauge asked:
A while back my wife said she wanted to plant a vegetable garden. She went to the garden depot and bought a wheel barrow, a shovel and a hoe and other assorted garden tools along with bags of top soil, fertilizer and pots of all shapes and sizes...and then tried to store it all in the garage! Nope, looks like I needed to do some shopping myself and buy a good set of outdoor garden shed plans.
I didn't realized how much you actually needed to know when building such a structure. One thing I did not think of was the load on the roof when it snowed. Please check this because snow is some really heavy stuff and most shed plans come with a fairly flat roof pitch and use small spec lumber which will collapse under the load, especially when the snow gets packed and icy.
Also, a shed will make a great target form people wanting to steal items to sell to pawn shops and flea markets, lawn and garden equipment sells great at these types of venues, so get a good solid heavy door and solid lock.
I would also suggest that you get plans for a shed that is a little bit larger than you think you need because believe me, it will fill up fast and when your wife decides that she no longer likes gardening you will have run out of room for anything else.
Next, if it gets hot where you live you have to make sure the plans include a roof vent because it can get very hot in there and quite possibly damage some of the shed's contents. And what ever you do, do not try and save money by using cheap lumber that will quickly rot. Use wood recommended by the lumber store or on your shed plans and then seal and paint it so it will last for many years.
An outdoor garden shed is great to have and is worth the investment. Just make sure if you are going to be building it yourself, that you get a good set of plans, it will save you a lot of time and money for sure.
